February 2013 WISA President’s Message
By Jeff Arbogast
I thank all of you who attended our annual WISA/IEEE Delaware Bay joint meeting in January. While this meeting was hosted by IEEE (we will host in 2014), there was strong participation from WISA members. Now, we enter the heart of our WISA schedule with monthly events from February through June (our famous Shrimp Boil in April, our annual picnic in June, and section meetings).
For our upcoming meeting on February 26th, we are particularly excited to have WISA member Cullen Langford presenting on Control Valve Selection. Cullen was appointed an ISA Fellow in 1998 in recognition of his “contributions to the prediction of aerodynamic control valve noise.” He authored Chapter 4.15 “Valve Positioners and Accessories” and 4.16 “Valve Sizing” in the Instrument Engineers Handbook, Process Control, Second Edition. I look forward to Cullen’s presentation and look forward to seeing you there.
In order to promote the automation profession in general (and ISA in particular), the Wilmington section is proud to continue to offer the $1000 Ralph L. Moore Scholarship to a graduating high school senior attending a 4-year college/university or technical training school. Given the technical focus of our society, candidates pursuing a technical or science degree will receive preferential treatment. Please distribute the application (http://www.isa.org/filestore/microsites/RalphLMooreApplication2013.doc) widely among your friends, family, and colleagues. Please sponsor qualified candidates. The deadline for applications is April 8th. We will present the scholarship at our most festive occasion - our annual Shrimp Boil on April 23rd.
On 5-7 November 2013, the ISA Fall Leaders Meeting and Automation Week will be held in Nashville, TN (http://www.isaautomationweek.org/). I am a member of the technical program committee and chair of the poster session. Our call for papers will open shortly and I will provide more details in my March message. At Automation Week, ISA holds an Honors and Awards Gala to celebrate those who have made special and impactful contributions to the society and to our profession. I encourage you to nominate candidates for the various awards offered. The deadline is March 31st. For more information, visit the ISA Honors & Awards website. WISA has a strong history of award recipients, including Nick Sands, who was named an ISA Fellow in 2012 (see picture from the gala).
Please encourage your friends and colleagues about ISA. Member benefits include: access to view ISA standards, access to over 40 technical webinars, access to download over 2500 technical papers presented at ISA conferences and symposia over the years, a subscription to InTech (the magazine of ISA) , and online access to ISA Transactions (our scientific journal). ISA members can also apply their full membership fee toward the purchase of an ISA standard (to download or print).   You can even get  rewards for recruiting new members. Please bring a friend to our meeting on February 26th

Control Valve Selection

February 26, 2013

Speaker: Cullen Langford

Place: Applied Control Engineering office 5:23 pm

Applied Control Engineering

The Mill at White Clay
700 Creek View Road
Newark, DE 19711
Phone: 302-738-8800

A recent survey showed a continuing intereset in Control Valves and the Section responded by scheduling Cullen Langford for this task. He wrote the chapter on selection for the ISA Practical Guide series Control Valve Handbook and will use that as the starting point for this meeting. Compressing 50 pages of ranting and raving into a 20 minute exciting presentation is a serious challange.

Cullen has a BS in mechanical engineering, is a licensed PE, Life ISA Fellow, Past president, WISA, retired from Du Pont, and active in ISA for many years.

Special opportunity: Click<here> to send an email to Cullen with comments and suggestions .

Annual Joint ISA/IEEE meeting:

Monday, Jan 14, 2013.

Topic: Hybrid Cars
Dinner: 6:30 pm, Program  7:15 pm
Speaker: Barbara Gonzales, Delmarva and additional speakers.
Place: Delmarva Conference Center; location as follows:

There is parking to the right, and further up to the left.

Delmarva Power currently uses hybrid vehicles including Ford Escape and other vendors.
Expected to be included in the presentation:
Overview of power system -- electric system, engine/generator, regenerative braking, transmission system, etc.  --  differences between power systems of different vehicles.  Battery sizes and range on electric, how gasoline engine assists, battery life, performance -efficiency comparisons, temperature pre-conditioning while tied to electric,  battery management systems, charging systems - capacity, time to charge, ability to be a flexible load for the utility, V2G, adoption rates, impact to the grid, upgrade considerations - line transformer, house wiring, load center, service to home, etc.

"Migration of Legacy Control Systems" Tim Cole- ACE

Speaker: Timothy L. Cole, P.E., President, Applied Control Engineering, Inc.

Abstract:

In today’s U.S. economy, the average automation professional is much more likely to upgrade an existing process control system than he or she is to design a greenfield plant.  Corporate policies, sister plants and site experience can all influence the system platform selection; not to mention project constraints introduced by market conditions, space limitations and desired features.

This discussion will define the topic, cover when and why a system retrofit should be undertaken, and discuss project considerations, options and pitfalls.  .

September 25 meeting.

How Cloud Computing can be used to create a secure and  reliable remote management solution.

Speaker: Jason Block-HMS Industrial Networks, Inc.

There is a growing need in discrete and process automation to be able to collect and monitor systems remotely.

With the increased use of Ethernet, WiFi and Cellular communications technologies in the industrial marketplace, it is becoming more practical to use Cloud-based systems for remote management of systems.

We will discuss the various communications technologies that may be used for remote access and also compare centralized and de-centralized Cloud Computing.

Security of the Cloud and its implications for automation will be discussed.

Bio – Jason Block has been a Sales Channel Manager for HMS Industrial Networks for nine years and has been working in the automation industry for nearly 17 years as an applications engineer and sales manager. Much of his experience has been in the field of industrial communications with emphasis on industrial fieldbus and Ethernet.  He was awarded Bachelor of Science Degrees in both Physics and Mathematics from Indiana University.
