ISA12.21, Optically radiating equipment and fiber optics in hazardous locations
The subcommittee shall survey, monitor, and participate in the development of national and international standards, practices, and codes addressing optically radiating equipment and fiber optics in hazardous (classified) locations.
Provide support to ISA in the areas of optically radiating equipment and fiber optics in hazardous (classified) locations.
To develop, publish and maintain standards and practices related to optically radiating equipment and fiber optics in hazardous (classified) locations.
To enhance the protection concepts of such optically radiating equipment and fiber optics, and ISA's continued leadership in this area.
To promote current technology for the proper installation, use, and maintenance of optically radiating equipment and fiber optics to enhance safety in hazardous (classified) locations.
To provide technical support to industry in the areas of optically radiating equipment and fiber optics in hazardous (classified) locations.
The most recent ISA12.21 subcommittee meeting took place on 15 March 2012 at the Homewood Suites in Orlando, FL.
Comments received on Draft 2 of ISA-60079-28 (12.21.02) were discussed and addressed. Draft 2 is now ready to be administratively processed towards publication.
The Title, Scope and Purpose are now updated and displayed on the ISA12.21 webpage.
2014 NEC proposals (qty. 7 total) were drafted by ISA12.21 on behalf of ISA12 introducing the issue of optical radiation into Articles 500, 501 and 505 and identifying ISA-TR12.21.01 and ISA-60079-28 (12.21.02) as the respective US national standards for the associated protection technique requirements. All proposals have been rejected by NEC Code Making Panel 14 during the Report on Proposals (ROP) meeting. The reason given for rejecting the proposals referenced a lack of substantiation for the testing criteria being indicative of typical installations in the hazardous (classified) locations, with no evidence that existing equipment in use should be tested to these additional standards. The next step for these proposals is for public comments to be received and addressed during the December 2012 CMP-14 Report on Comments (ROC) meeting.
Further maintenance efforts on ISA-TR12.21.01 are to wait until ISA-60079-28 (12.21.02) is published.
The subcommittee is scheduled to meet 28 February 2013 at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel San Diego Downtown, San Diego, California.
