ISA12.2, Intrinsic Safety

Scope

The committee shall survey, monitor, and participate in the development of national and international standards, practices, and codes addressing intrinsically safe apparatus and systems for the use in Hazardous (Classified) Locations. Provide support for ISA as the TAG Administrator for the IEC TC31 SC31G USTAG (Intrinsic Safety).

Purpose

To summarize current practices and publish standards and practices related to intrinsic safety for electrical equipment intended for the use in Class I, Zone 0, 1 and 2, Zone 20, 21, and 22 Hazardous (Classified) Locations and Class I, II and III, Divisions 1 and 2 Hazardous (Classified) Locations.
To submit proposals, as needed, for revisions to standards and practices addressing intrinsically safe apparatus and systems.
To enhance the protection concept of intrinsic safety and ISA's continued leadership in this area.
To promote the proper installation, use, and maintenance of intrinsically safe apparatus and systems to enhance safety in hazardous (classified) locations.

Activity

A joint meeting of ISA12.2 subcommittee and SC31G USTAG took place on 22 October 2012 at the Renaissance Seattle Hotel, Seattle, Washington.

It was reported that no changes have been made to US NRTL (nationally recognized testing laboratories) intrinsic safety standards (UL 913 and FM 3610). The subcommittee discussed how future editions of these standards would integrate requirements for Class II and III.

The subcommittee reviewed the minutes and technical documents related to the SC31G activities including the outcome of meetings held in Oslo. The next scheduled meetings for SC31G maintenance teams will be in March 2013 at the FM offices in Windsor, UK. Several SC31G USTAG members will be in attendance as well as ISA12.2 Chair Nick Ludlam.

ISA-12.02.02 was circulated to the subcommittee for comment. Based on the comments received, the draft requires significant modification prior to ballot. The project leader will incorporate technical and editorial input provided at the meeting into the document, which will be balloted to the subcommittee.

The subcommittee reviewed the status of the other documents in the ISA12.02 Work Program.

ANSI/ISA-60079-27 (12.02.04)-2006, Electrical Apparatus For Use In Class I, Zones 0, 1 & 2 Hazardous (Classified) Locations - Fieldbus Intrinsically Safe Concept (FISCO) and Fieldbus Non-Incendive Concept (FNICO), will be proposed for withdrawal when ISA-60079-25 and ISA-60079-11 Ed 6.0 are published.
ANSI-ISA-60079-11 (12.02.01)-2012, Explosive Atmospheres – Part 11: Equipment protection by intrinsic safety “i”, has passed ISA S&P Board ballot and has been submitted for ANSI approval. A working group is investigating the level of protection ‘ic’.
ISA-12.02.03, Intrinsically Safe System Assessment Using the Entity Concept; there is currently no activity on the document.

The next meeting of the ISA12.2 subcommittee and SC31G USTAG will be held 25 February 2012 at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel San Diego Downtown, San Diego, California.

Recent SC31G documents will be reviewed in preparation for the March 2013 meeting.

The ISA12.2 subcommittee will review the ISA12.02 work program and identify priorities and review the proposed national differences for ‘ic’ related to ANSI/ISA-60079-11.
