The committee shall survey, monitor, and participate in the development of national and international standards, practices, and codes addressing intrinsically safe apparatus and systems for the use in Hazardous (Classified) Locations. Provide support for ISA as the TAG Administrator for the IEC TC31 SC31G USTAG (Intrinsic Safety).
Purpose
To summarize current practices and publish standards and practices related to intrinsic safety for electrical equipment intended for the use in Class I, Zone 0, 1 and 2, Zone 20, 21, and 22 Hazardous (Classified) Locations and Class I, II and III, Divisions 1 and 2 Hazardous (Classified) Locations.
To submit proposals, as needed, for revisions to standards and practices addressing intrinsically safe apparatus and systems.
To enhance the protection concept of intrinsic safety and ISA's continued leadership in this area.
To promote the proper installation, use, and maintenance of intrinsically safe apparatus and systems to enhance safety in hazardous (classified) locations.
Activity
A joint meeting of ISA12.2 subcommittee and SC31G USTAG took place on 12 March 2012 at the Homewood Suites in Orlando, FL.
Following the discussions held at previous ISA12.2 meetings, it was brought to the attention of ISA12.2 that comments on newly developed Telecommunications Industry Association standard BSR/TIA 4950-201x Requirements for Battery-Powered Portable Land Mobile Radio Applications in Class I, II and III Division 1 Hazardous (Classified) Locations currently at final ANSI review were due by 2 April 2012. No discussion on this document was held.
Meeting minutes from 27 October 2011 IEC SC31G plenary meeting in Melbourne, Australia and annexes to the minutes were discussed.
A new IEC WG was formed in Melbourne and a call for experts to join this WG4 “Spark Test Apparatus” was circulated to further develop the conclusions of AHG3.
A corrigendum to IEC 60079-11 Edition 6 will be incorporated into the ISA adoption.
Upcoming April 2012 meetings (WG37, PT60079-39 and TC31 CAG) were discussed.
ISA-60079-27 Electrical Apparatus for Use In Class I, Zones 0, 1 and 2 Hazardous (Classified) Locations – Fieldbus Intrinsically Safe Concept (FISCO) and Fieldbus Non-Incendive Concept (FNICO) standard will be proposed for withdrawal once ISA-60079-25 and ISA-60079-11 Edition 6 are published.
ISA12.2 has begun the adoption of Edition 6 of ISA-60079-11 Explosive Atmospheres Part 11: Equipment Protection by Intrinsic Safety “i". Comments were reviewed and the standard modified where necessary. An assessment of level of protection ‘ic’ was reviewed and modifications made. This assessment will be presented to IEC 60079-11 Maintenance Team for consideration as an annex. The Draft Edition 6 of ISA-60079-11 and proposed annex will be circulated for comment and balloted separately and combined at a later date if necessary. At the main ISA12 meeting that followed the ISA12.2 meeting the issue of adoption of the standards for mining was raised. As a result, deviations for Group I will be incorporated into the draft ISA-60079-11 Ed 6.0 to be balloted.
Comments on ISA-12.02.02 Recommendations for the Preparation, Content and Organization of Intrinsic Safety Control Drawings were reviewed. After some formatting corrections the document will be circulated for committee and subcommittee comment and ballot.
NFPA proposals submitted by ISA12.2 were accepted (some with minor modifications) during the January 2012 NFPA ROP meeting.
