ISA12.16, Increased Safety for Zone 1, Hazardous Locations

Scope

The committee shall survey, monitor, and participate in the development of national and international standards, practices, and codes for increased safety as a protection technique, and promote the understanding of increased safety.

Purpose

1. To summarize current practices for increased safety as a protection technique for electrical equipment intended for use in hazardous (classified) locations.

2. To publish standards and practices for the construction, marking, and performance of equipment, using increased safety as a protection technique.

3. To submit proposals, as needed, for revisions to standards and practices outlining the various methods for increased safety to prevent ignition of flammable atmospheres.

Activity

ISA12.16 met 24 October 2012 at the Renaissance Seattle Hotel, Seattle, Washington, and reviewed the latest version of IEC 60079-07, which was generated during the MT60079-7 meeting held on 1 and 2 October 2012 in Oslo Norway at the Thon Bristol Hotel. The main purpose of the IEC meeting was to discuss and include additional input from Motors (WG27) and Luminaires (AHG38) in what is to be released as a 2nd CD. The document has been sent to the IEC and the CD should be released shortly.

The next ISA12.16 meeting is scheduled to occur on 27 February 2013 at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel San Diego Downtown in San Diego, California. At that time the US position on comments will be discussed in preparation for the MT 60079-7 meeting to be held in Windsor in March 2013.
