ISA12, Electrical Equipment for Hazardous Locations

Scope

To formulate standards, recommended practices, and technical reports for safe and practical use of equipment in hazardous (classified) locations, and for equipment used for the detection of combustible gases.

Purpose

To organize, manage, and coordinate all ISA Standards and Practices Department activities related to electrical equipment for installation in hazardous (classified) locations, and for electrical equipment used to detect, alarm, or otherwise process signals relating to the detection of materials within their combustible ranges.

ISA12 Work Program

The ISA12 Standards Committee is very active, currently working on 11 documents at various stages of the standards approval process. In addition, there are 39 published ISA12 standards, recommended practices, and technical reports available. The linked spreadsheet shows the status of both the working and published documents.

ISA12 and Adoption of IEC Standards

The ISA12 Standards Committee has adopted, with some modifications, many of the IEC 60079 series standards and is closely tied to the work of the TC31 US Technical Advisory Group -- working together toward harmonization with the ISA and IEC standards. The following is a guideline on the development of these adoptions of IEC standards.

Welcome to the ISA12 Standards Committee. We always have a very solid meeting turnout and will be meeting again in February 2013 in San Diego, California. To find out more about ISA12 activities, you may read the minutes from the previous meeting in March 2012 in Orlando, Florida (the October 2012 minutes will be posted soon).

The ISA12 Committee and Subcommittees are primarily interested in promoting the safe design and use of electrical equipment in hazardous (classified) locations. The topics of the standards currently in production range from intrinsic safety to combustible dust atmospheres to combustible gas detectors.

Please join us if you have interest or expertise in this area. Everyone is welcome to attend but we are especially in need of user participation on the Committee. If you have any questions about the Committee and its activities, please contact ISA's staff representative, Eliana Brazda.

The Spring 2013 ISA12 Meetings will be held at the Doubletree Hilton Hotel San Diego Downtown, 1646 Front Street, San Diego, California 92101. The sleeping room rate is $139 single or double.
