To provide the underground mining industry with industry consensus standards, recommended practices, and technical reports for the design and use of underground mining equipment and for equipment to detect materials within their flammable ranges; to provide the Mine Safety and Health Administration with industry consensus documents to aid in promulgating regulations under Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations; to participate in the development of international standards for such mining equipment.
The most recent ISA12.28 working group meeting took place on 25 February 2013 in San Diego, California. The Mining Working Group reviewed the status of the ISA-60079 adoptions with Group I requirements retained. Two standards have been published with the Group I requirements retained, one is the ANSI/ISA-60079-11 ed. 6 for intrinsic safety and the other is the ANSI/ISA-60079-28 ed. 1 for optical radiation. Two other standards are being balloted, ISA-60079-0 ed. 6 General Requirements and ISA-60079-29-1 Gas detectors - Performance requirements.
The ISA12.28 working group will meet next on 2 October 2013 at Underwriters Laboratories (UL) in Northbrook, Illinois.
