Presentation by:

Mr. Mark Cooksley
, Product Mgr. Security and Network/Mgmt. Solutions for Hirschmann

Highlights:

Hirschmann, the leader in Industrial Ethernet Networking components, will present on the subject of industrial network security.  The presentation will explain existing technologies such as switch security, firewalls, and Virtual Private Networks, and describe how these can be used to meet the specific challenges of securing an industrial network

A robust security posture is essential for every Ethernet-based network, even if that network is never connected to another network. This places an onus on each network administrator to not only understand network security, but to effectively implement it. Unfortunately network security is awash with buzz words and acronyms. This results in a steep learning curve for network administrators who want to become familiar with the topic.

.

Armed with the necessary knowledge, a network administrator can make informed decisions about how and where to build security functionality into an existing or new network. Current network security techniques, if applied correctly, can greatly reduce the risk of an intentional or unintentional security breach.

Highest network availability is the target of every industrial network administrator. Implementing effective network security is a key step to achieving this goal. With good knowledge of security deployment, a network administrator can ensure reliable operation of the most mission-critical industrial Ethernet networks.

Mark Cooksley entered the communications industry in 1985, designing and supporting Wide Area Networks for the British banking industry. In 1995 he moved to Newbridge Networks, providing Ethernet and ATM consultancy services to European governments, police forces, military, and healthcare institutions. Mark joined Hirschmann in 1997, helping to found the Network Solutions division in the UK.  Since 1998 he has been based at Hirschmann’s head office in Germany, and is Product Manager for security and network management solutions. .
