2011 Fall Classic Golf Tournament and Table Top Show

The “2011 Fall Classic”

By Jeff Blue

The 2011 “Fall Classis” started off with a golf tournament at the Las Vegas National Golf Club.  The weather was spectacular.  The golf gods were smiling that day.

Stan Spence arrived early to help get the golfers off at the 7:30 A.M. shotgun start.  We had 10 teams set to challenge the course that day.   This year we had complimentary continental breakfast at he clubhouse.  We hope you enjoyed the opportunity to meet before the sunrise.

We completed the round at about 12:15 and headed to the Boulder Station Hotal and Casino for a lunch buffet and awards presentations in the “Railhead” show room.  The First place team was from EMA and they shot a 55 and was comprised of Brad Callihan, Rick Giltner, Jeff Solomon and Dan Chan.  The Second Place team was from Ultimate Alarm Company and they shot a round of 59 and was comprised of Angel Yumart, Jim Lemar, Vic Hickly and Marty Huerta!  The Third place team shot a round of 60 and was sponsored by Cortech Engineering and was comprised of Denny McCollum, Adam Nabors, Jim Zidow, and Sean Patterson.

Congratulations on your great rounds of golf!  The one other team that was recognized for their performance was from the Wunderlich-Malech Engineering team of, Stan Spence, Brain Oswalt, Mike Travisano, and Ross Hann for their “EXTREAM” use of golf clubs.  They shot a tournament record 76. By the way that was two up from last year.

This year we had two Longest-Drive holes.  The #1 hole, “Longest-Drive” sponsored by CCI, was won by Brad Calihan.  The #4 hole, “Longest-Drive” sponsored by Rockwell Automation, was won by Dan Chan.  We had two Closest-to-The-Pin holes as well this year.  Closest-to-The-Pin hole #11 was sponsored by Blair–Martin Co. and it was won by Marty Huerta.  Closest-to-The-Pin Hole #16 was sponsored by Keller Electrical Industries and was won by Sean Patterson.

Thanks again to Stan Spence for volunteering to help at the golf registration this year.  A special thanks goes out to Rocky Nunes along with the whole Las Vegas National Golf Course staff for their efforts in pulling the tournament together.

After the golf trophies and raffles were handed out we opened the show.  We had 16 tables slated for use in the show room and we had two technical presentations scheduled for the afternoon.

The First presentation was “Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) Advantage” by Alexis Dennis from ATI with Jerome Korthase from EnerSys Reserve Power Group presenting. The first time slot was from 2:20 P.M. until 3:20 P.M.  TPPL technology is setting new standards for industrial battery performance.

The Second presentation was “Sample Systems for Potable Water”  by: Steve Pickard, Southern Nevada Water System, Mechanical Engineer, PE. and Jeff Blue Southern Nevada Water System, Control Systems Engineer, CAP  It was schedule to run from 3:30 P.M. to 4:30 P.M.

This session will cover Southern Nevada Water System (SNWS) continuous on line potable water analyzer sample systems design and operating standards.  It will cover the essential components, performance specifications and piping guidelines required to build and operate a potable water sample system based on SNWS standards.  This is a great opportunity for technicians and operators to gain insight into how these systems are constructed and utilized in potable water as well as some waste water systems.

After the presentations were made and the Professional development hours were issued to the attendees, it was time for the “Happy Hour” portion of the event.  This time us the perfect opportunity to network with friends and colleges.  We also made the door prize presentations during the social portion of the show.  .

This year I want to take a moment to give a huge acknowledgement to Mandy Morgan, Connie Gildersleeve and the entire staff from Boulder Station Hotel and Casino,  The team work and constant attention helped make the event activities work flawlessly.  A special note to Connie Gildersleeve for making the donation of the two 3-day and 2-Night stay certificates at Boulder Station and Palace Station Hotel and Casino.  The donations are greatly appreciated and go a long way to support our organization.  Thank you!

I want to give a thank you to Art Gral and Ed Fontenez, for coordinating the tabletop set up inside the “Railhead” Show Room.   Also, I want to acknowledge Stan Spence, Las Vegas Section President, for his support of this year’s tournament

I want to give a special “Thank You” to my wife Ellen Blue. She gave me the moral support I needed to put this event together with our section, for our section, and to make it the success that I that it has become.

I am looking forward to doing this next year and I certainly hope you are planning to participate.
