The “2010 Fall Classic” LV Section Table-Top

By Jeff Blue

The 2010 ISA “Fall Classis” started off with a golf tournament at the Las Vegas National Golf Club. Since I was there way before the light of day caught up with Las Vegas, I got only this photo at the ISA duffers’ event. Stan Spence arrived early to help get the golfers promptly off at the 7:30 A.M. shotgun start time. We had 11 teams set to challenge the course that day. Some players utilized the practice areas and others had a little breakfast, but all were ready when the time came to head out.

We completed the round at about 12:30 and headed back to the Palace Station for a lunch buffet and the awards presentations. The First and second place team had to go to PGA score card tie breaker method. All score card markings were good and the first handicapped hole was a match, but the second handicap hole had the Ultimate Alarm team with a birdie which gave them the win.

The First Place team was from Ultimate Alarm Company shot a round of 64 and was comprised of Angel Yumart, Jim Lemar, Vic Hickly and Marty Huerta! The Second place team from EMA also shot a 64 and was comprised of Brad Callihan, Larry McKenzie, Jeff Solomon and Todd Pickle. The Third place team shot a round of 65 and was sponsored by R&R Engineering and was comprised of Colin Knight, Chip Heinrich, Brian Shaffer, Steven Shaffer. Congratulations on your great rounds of golf! The one other team that was recognized for their performance was from the Wunderlich-Malech group of , Brain Oswalt, Dan Fischer, Tim Laws, and Jeff Martin for their “EXTREAM” use of golf clubs they shot a tournament record 74.  The “Longest Drive” was the #1 hole which was sponsored by Rockwell Automation. It was won by Brain Shaffer. The closest to the pin hole #8. Which was sponsored by Control Solutions. It was won by Brad Callihan.

Thanks again to Stan Spence for volunteering to help at the golf registration. A special thanks goes out to Rachel Palmer and Vic Wilks along with the whole Las Vegas National Golf Course staff for their efforts in pulling the tournament together. After the golf trophies and raffles were handed out we opened the Table-Top show. We had 16 tables slated for use in the show room and we had two technical presentations scheduled for the afternoon.

The first presentation was “Pressurized Surge Chamber Operations” by Steve Pickard, Southern Nevada Water System, Mechanical Engineer, PE. It was schedule to run from 2:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M. Steve Pickard is a Mechanical Engineer with Southern Nevada Water System. He discussed SNWS level control strategy associated with pressurized surge control chambers. This topic covered the fundamentals of surge tank function, control strategy, surge tank monitoring, testing, problem identification and correction. Examples of surge tank control failure and miss operations were illustrated during the hour long program.

The second presentation was “Control Loop Drawings – From Tag to Circuits” by yours truly Jeff Blue, Southern Nevada Water System, Controls Systems Engineer, CAP It was schedule to run from 3:45 P.M. to 4:45 P.M This presentation was on the development of an instrument tag identification process and how the tags coordinate with different systems and the actual controlled process. It covered issues from the Instrument Tag Identification (Tag ID) guide lines, to how the loop is linked to the loop diagram(s). We went over several of the ISA standards used in this process and covered some regional use of these standards as seen on field drawings. After the presentations were made and the Professional Development Hours certificates (PDH) were issued to the attendees, it was time for the “Happy Hour” portion of the event. This gave us the perfect opportunity for vendors and attendees network with friends and colleges. We gave away the door prizes during the social portion of the show. We have posted the list of prize winners and the supporter who graciously donated thethm for our show.

I want to give a thank you to Vince Brashear, Las Vegas Section President, for coordinating the table top set up. He deserves a big hand for giving special recognition to the technical presenters. Also, I want to acknowledge Stan Spence, Las Vegas Section Vice-President, and Leigh Vigil for their contribution for manning the sign in table. I want to give a very special “Thank You” to my wife Ellen Blue. She gave me the moral support I needed to put this event together with our section, for our section, and to make it the success that I that it has become. I am looking forward to doing this next year and I certainly hope that you all are planning to participate.
