May 2013 WISA President’s Message
By Jeff Arbogast
On April 23rd, we had our annual Shrimp Boil in memory of WISA past-president Dan Roarty. This is our section’s largest and most-anticipated social event each year. As you can see from the pictures, this year’s Shrimp Boil was even better attended than it has been in recent years. As always, the food was excellent as was the socializing and networking. If you couldn’t make it this year, I hope this inspires you to join us next year – on Tuesday, April 22, 2014.
Thank you to all of our sponsors, the Friends of the Shrimp and Boil Buddies, for making this event possible. Please find a list of our sponsors in the April and May Sensor newsletters. In particular, we thank our Shrimp Master, Joe Gunn, and his sidekick, Mike Scott, from North East Technical Sales for volunteering again to prepare the feast (including shopping for the ingredients).
On Tuesday, May 28th, we will tour the Twin Lakes Brewery in Greenville, DE. Please reserve your space by contacting Lee Cline. There will be food and refreshments afterwards. The tour is limited to 20 people so it is imperative that you RSVP. The event is being sponsored by Applied Control Engineering and Rumsey Electric so there is no cost.
In order to promote the automation profession in general (and ISA in particular), the Wilmington section is proud to continue to offer the $1000 Ralph L. Moore Scholarship to a graduating high school senior attending a 4-year college/university or technical training school. Given the technical focus of our society, candidates pursuing a technical or science degree will receive preferential treatment. Please distribute the application (http://www.isa.org/filestore/microsites/RalphLMooreApplication2013.doc) widely among your friends, family, and colleagues with enough time to allow them to obtain the required letters of recommendation. Please sponsor qualified candidates. We have extended the deadline for applications until May 31st. We will present the scholarship at our picnic on June 25th.
As we close the year, I encourage you to involve yourself in the various activities of the Wilmington Section. There are many ways to be an active member: participating in section meetings; encouraging others to join ISA and participate in our activities; mentoring others in the automation profession; and participating in section committees (organization of the Spring 2014 Wilmington ISA Show is a particular need). Please contact me at jeffrey.arbogast@airliquide.com if you are interested in becoming more involved or if you have any questions, suggestions, concerns, or comments about the Wilmington Section and its activities.
Please encourage your friends and colleagues about ISA. Member benefits include: access to view ISA standards, access to over 40 technical webinars, access to download over 2500 technical papers presented at ISA conferences and symposia over the years, a subscription to InTech (the magazine of ISA) , and online access to ISA Transactions (our scientific journal). ISA members can also apply their full membership fee toward the purchase of an ISA standard (to download or print). You can even get rewards for recruiting new members. Please bring a friend to our shrimp boil on April 23rd.
