ISA12.04, Instrument Purging for Reduction of Hazardous Area Classification
Scope
The committee shall survey both domestic and international practices of purging and pressurizing apparatus and related matters (such as the effects of corrosion on purged and pressurized enclosures); monitor the development of NFPA 496 and IEC 60079-2 to accomplish the Committee's stated objectives; and promote the use of purging and pressurization disciplines.
Purpose
To summarize current practices for purging and pressurizing electrical enclosures intended for use in hazardous (classified) locations and electrical enclosures containing an internal source of flammable gases or vapors.
To publish standards and practices for the construction, marking, and performance of purged and pressurized enclosures.
To submit proposals, as needed, for revisions to standards and practices outlining the various methods of purging and pressurizing enclosures to prevent ignition of flammable atmospheres (e.g., NFPA 496, IEC 60079).
A Word from the Chairman
Regarding continued work on ISA-12.04.02, the pressurized enclosure standard for Division certification based upon IEC 60079-2, the subcommittee has agreed that equipment built to IEC 60079-2 will meet the requirements of NFPA 496 with the exception of marking, and there does not seem to be a significant reason for continuing work on this document. The subcommittee has begun updating ISA-61241-2 to include IIIA, IIIB and IIIC and on the adoption of IEC 60079-2 Ed. 5.
