ISA12.13, Performance Requirements for Combustible Gas Detectors
Scope
Prepare standards and recommended practices for performance, installation, operation, and maintenance of combustion gas detection instruments. Promote current technology for proper use and maintenance to enhance safety of hazardous areas. Be a source of technical information. Support efforts to obtain international standards for these instruments.
Purpose
To actively monitor applications, be a source for technical information, and prepare documents as needed to improve minimum performance of combustible gas detection instruments.
Activity
The joint ISA12.13 and ISA92 meeting was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, 23 and 24 October 2012 at the Renaissance Seattle Hotel, Seattle, Washington.
The ISA-60079-29-1 (12.13.01) Edition 2 (Combustible Gas Performance) Draft 8 document was submitted for ballot and comment to ISA12 and ISA12.13. The collated comments were discussed during the meeting and only one technical change was made to the document. If resolution of negative ballots is achieved on the document, the single technical change regarding inclusion of Group I requirements for fault signals and environmental exposure will be re-balloted by the ISA12 Committee and ISA12.13 Subcommittee. If resolution of negative ballots is not achieved on the document, the entire document will be re-balloted by the ISA12 Committee and ISA12.13 Subcommittee.
The ISA-60079-29-2 (12.13.02) Edition 2 (Combustible Gas Installation & Maintenance) document has been balloted and approved by the ISA S&P Board and public review, and the document has now been released as an ANSI document.
The ISA-TR12.13.03 (Combustible Gas Detection as a Method of Protection) has been released and is now a referenced document within NFPA 70, Articles 500-505 for gas detection as a method of protection.
The ISA-12.13.04/FM6325 (Open Path Gas Performance) requires reaffirmation using the FM PIN. The long term goal is for adoption of the IEC 60079-29-4 standard with National Deviation; therefore, it will be necessary to coordinate this effort through FM.
The ISA-92.00.01 (Toxic Gas Performance) has been approved by the committee, S&P Board and ANSI. The document has now formally replaced the other ISA-92.xx.01 Toxic Gas Performance Standards (except ISA-92.04.01, Oxygen Gas Performance). A committee member has requested consideration for addressing other gases (e.g. HF) since the existing ISA-92.00.01 Annex A Table only includes 11 toxic gases and the scope states intent to cover detection of all toxic gases. A response has been provided within the meeting minutes.
The ISA-92.00.02 (Toxic Gas Detection Installation & Maintenance), Edition 2, Draft 2 document was submitted for ballot and comment to ISA92. The collated comments were discussed during the meeting and the document will be submitted for a re-ballot to ISA92. The document is intended to replace the other ISA-92.xx.02 Toxic Gas Performance Installation & Maintenance (except ISA-92.04.02, Oxygen Gas Installation & Maintenance).
The ISA-TR92.00.03 (Toxic Gas Detection as a Method of Personnel Protection) document was discussed and further development work is necessary prior to ballot by the committee.
The ISA-92.00.04 (Toxic Open Path Equipment Gas Performance) Draft 5 document was submitted for ballot and comment to ISA92. The collated comments were discussed during the meeting and the document will be submitted for a re-ballot to ISA92.
There are several ISA92 standards and recommended practices (ISA-RP92.0.02, ISA-RP92.02.02, ANSI/ISA-92.04.01, ISA-RP92.04.02, ISA-RP92.06.02, ANSI/ISA-TR92.06.03) requiring reaffirmation in support of the 5-year standard review cycle. The collated comments were discussed during the meeting. The documents will be reaffirmed with minor editorial changes.
ISA12.13 and ISA92 will meet 25-27 February 2013 at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel San Diego Downtown in San Diego, California. At the meeting ISA12.13 will discuss the status of the IEC TC31 MT 60079-29 documents (Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4), of ISA-60079-29-1 (12.13.01), and of FM 6325/ISA-12.13.04. ISA92 will review the comments submitted on ISA-92.0002, Edition 2, ISA-92.00.04, Edition 1, and ISA-TR92.00.03, Edition 1.
