I very much appreciate the “Autonomous-agent adaptive systems” article Jim Pinto wrote in the 19 March InTech e-weekly (www.isa.org/link/PP_031909). His statements about the scalability and robustness of such systems are absolutely correct; we have proven this in our work with agent-based systems over the past 15 years. In addition, such systems are much more adaptable/agile than “traditionally developed” systems in that individual agents (or groups of agents) can be added, changed, or replaced without breaking the rest of the system. We have tools that simplify system development by allowing the visual “assembly” of systems of components (agents).
It is interesting to note there are many applications for agent-based systems. In a recent article about smart-electrical smart grids http://cdtlnet.cdtl.umn.edu/FortheGoodoftheGrid.pdf, University of Minnesota Professor Massoud Amin discusses the need for agent-based smart grid systems. We are presently exploring opportunities in this area.
