ISA-95 Enterprise-Control System Integration series to be extended to Part 6
The ISA95 committee has voted to extend its series of standards with the development of a new standard, to be called ISA-95.00.06, “Enterprise/Control System Integration Part 6 – Information Service Messaging Model.” This standard will be based on the use of ISA-95 abstract models from Parts 2, 4, and 5 to define a set of services that may be used for exchanging data exchange messages in a publish/subscribe mode and a request/response mode. It will define a minimal interface subset for message exchange systems.
The beginning of work on Part 6 follows the recent completion by ISA95 of the following two revisions, each of which is currently before the American National Standards Institute awaiting final approval:
- ISA-95.00.03, Part 3: Activity Models of Manufacturing Operations Management
- ISA-95.00.05, Part 5: Business-to-Manufacturing Transactions
The ISA-95 Part 3 standard defines activity models of manufacturing operations management that enable an enterprise system to control system integration. The activities defined are consistent with the ISA-95 Part 1 object models definitions. The modeled activities operate between business planning and logistics functions, defined as the Part 1 Level 4 functions, and the process control functions, defined as the Part 1 Level 2 functions. The scope of Part 3 encompasses: a model of the activities associated with manufacturing operations management; Level 3 functions; and an identification of some of the data exchanged between Level 3 activities.
The ISA-95 Part 5 standard defines transactions in terms of information exchanges between applications performing business and manufacturing activities associated with Levels 3 and 4. The exchanges are intended to enable information collection, retrieval, transfer, and storage in support of enterprise-control system integration. Part 5 is consistent with the Part 1 models and terminology and Part 2 object model attributes, defining transactions that specify how to exchange the objects defined in Part 1 Clause 7 and Part 2.

ISA-5.1 Instrumentation Symbols Software introduced for use with AutoCAD
ANSI/ISA5.1-2009, Instrumentation Symbols and Identification, is ISA’s most widely used standard. It establishes a uniform means of depicting and identifying instruments or devices and their inherent functions, instrumentation systems and functions, and application software functions used for measurement, monitoring, and control, by presenting a designation system that includes identification schemes and graphic symbols.
A new software product based on the standard has been issued for use with the Autodesk AutoCAD software platform. It provides users with graphic symbols to be used during the engineering design and layout for a variety of instrumentation-related activities, including:
- Piping and instrument diagrams (P&ID)
- Process flow diagrams (PFD)
- Logic diagram development
- Electrical schematic layouts
- Functional block diagrams
- Instrument loop diagrams
The software provides annotative-style symbol blocks for resizing and layer color inheritance and text style selection, and symbol groups for symbol palette configuration for ease of symbol selection. Users can assign instrument ISA-style tag numbering format (including prefix, functional ID, loop number, and suffix) to instrument bubbles via preassigned attributes. Instrument bubbles include hidden attributes for manufacturer, model number, PLC/DCS, and more.
Other features include final control element actuator symbols, and final control elements programmed for drop down selection; instrumentation device and function symbols programmed with drop down selection of “device location and accessibility” selection from one symbol; and in-process-line symbols (valves) programmed to blank out background when placed in a process line.
