ISA84 Certificate Program Requirements

There are no required prerequisites to register for Certificate 1: ISA84 SIS Fundamentals Specialist so an application is not required.

Certificate programs 2 and 3 have prerequisites and an application must be completed and sent to ISA at least six (6) weeks before the first day of the course if you would like to register for the certificate program. ISA will email you to confirm that you are eligible to register for Certificate Program 2 or 3 at least four (4) weeks before the course start date.

Certificate 1: ISA84 SIS Fundamentals Specialist

• This certificate program consists of a 4-day intensive training program and exam (or the 8-week online version and exam). There are no required prerequisites. An application is not required, however, it is recommended that attendees have at least 2 years experience in process automation and 2 years technical related education.
• Successfully complete the 4-day instructor-led training course, Safety Instrumented Systems—Design, Analysis, and Justification (Course EC50), and exam; or, complete the 8-week, online, instructor-assisted version of the course (Course EC50E) and exam.

Certificate 2: ISA84 SIL Selection Specialist

• This certificate program consists of a 2-day intensive training program and exam. 75% of the training is focused on practical applications and exercises.
• Prerequisites:
  • ISA84 Certificate 1: ISA84 SIS Fundamentals Specialist
  • 5 years experience in the process industry with
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in process safety in the following areas:
    • Facilitation of and/or participation in PHAs (process hazard analysis) or
    • Performed SIL determination/selection under supervision or independent
• An application must be completed and sent to ISA at least six (6) weeks before the first day of the course if you would like to register for the certificate program. ISA will email you to confirm that you meet the prerequisites to register for Certificate Program 2 at least four (4) weeks before the course start date.
• Successfully complete the 2-day instructor-led training course, Advanced Safety Integrity Level (SIL) Selection (Course EC52), and exam.

Certificate 3: ISA84 SIL Verification Specialist

• This certificate program consists of a 2-day intensive training program and exam. 75% of the training is focused on practical applications and exercises.
• Prerequisites:
  • ISA84 Certificate 1: ISA84 SIS Fundamentals Specialist
  • 5 years related experience in the process industry with
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in the following areas:
    • Specifying instruments and control systems
    • Programming PLCs
    • SIL verification calculations
    • Creation/modification of I&C design documents (e.g., process flow diagrams, P&IDs, loop diagrams, etc.)
    • Supporting start-up (including installation, commissioning, etc.)
    • Operation of process plants/facilities
• An application must be completed and sent to ISA at least six (6) weeks before the first day of the course if you would like to register for the certificate program. ISA will email you to confirm that you meet the prerequisites to register for Certificate Program 3 at least four (4) weeks before the course start date.
• Successfully complete the 2-day instructor-led training course, Advanced Design and SIL Verification (Course EC54), and exam.

ISA84 SIS Expert

Individuals who achieve Certificates 1, 2, and 3 are designated as ISA84 SIS Experts.

Renewal

Because the ISA84 SIS Certificate Programs are certificates and not certifications, you are not required to renew your ISA84 Certificate(s); however, once obtained your certificate(s) will only be considered current for three (3) years. After your three-year expiration date, your certificate’s status will no longer be considered active and you will not be able to claim that you hold a current/active ISA84 certificate.
