Meeting Format
-
50-minute time periods with short breaks between each period
-
General opening session held in the early part of the meeting to give provide information about Society plans and key topics for the week's meetings
-
Sessions are scheduled so conclusions and recommendations reached in the early days of the meeting can lead to decisions in the later days, culminating with the Executive Board meeting at the very end.
-
Task forces and committees typically meet early in the week and report conclusions to their respective Departments or Activity Boards.
-
Departments and District & Department Boards meet prior to the Executive Board meeting and submit proposals for Executive Board information or action.
-
Most meetings are open and all ISA members are welcome to attend any meeting, however, there are some exceptions as follows:
-
Closed — for committee members only as required by ISA's MOP Society Policy
-
By Invitation Only — social function which requires a personal invitation
-
Limited Attendance — facility room size or food function limits number of observers.
-
Facilities (room size and setup) are normally planned for the number of members in the group that is meeting. Observers are normally not participants in meeting discussions. The chair, at his/her discretion, can call on observers if the chair believes that it will further the business of the meeting, but the chair is not obligated to do so. The chair can call the meeting into executive session (group members only) at any time.
How to get the most out of a Leaders Meeting
-
Key is participation! Pass along your ideas, needs or proposals directly to appropriate Society units. Ask questions of other Society leaders during the breaks and social functions.
-
Important to attend the general sessions and all sessions that apply to your area of ISA responsibility
-
Meeting schedule available online and onsite at ISA registration desk
-
Review schedule and select the sessions that are the most interesting and valuable to you
-
Meetings are assigned a prefix to help identify related topics (i.e., DVP = District Vice Presidents, PUBS = Publications Department).
-
Leader Sessions (LDR)address the needs of section, district, division, department and Society officers, and provide basic information about various aspects of Society operations.
-
Some groups such as Standards & Practices Committees are working on on-going projects that are not related to other sessions taking place during the Leaders Meetings. All leaders are welcome to attend these sessions.
-
Social functions, including informal gatherings in the President's suite, are just as important to the conduct of ISA's affairs as the formal sessions. They provide you with ample opportunities to meet and network with other leaders and ISA staff.
Policy and program development
-
Activities and concepts being considered by ISA units are carefully reviewed, studied, and documented with supporting financial data.
-
New proposals are typically reviewed by the Strategic Planning Department and Finance Committee before going to the Executive Board for action.
-
Policy items approved by ISA Executive Board are documented in the ISA Manual of Organization and Procedures (MOP).
-
New ongoing programs adopted by the Executive Board such as a publication or a meeting, are integrated into the business plan and budget and implemented by the ISA staff.
