Don W. Thompson Award

The Don W. Thompson Award, established in 2001, recognizes exemplary efforts and achievements to encourage and support Student Activity and to Mentor Students. The award is in recognition of Don W. Thompson, Tulsa Section, who served as an exemplary role model for the many students he mentored and encouraged. His dedication to Student Support and involvement with ISA led to the creation of the District 8 Student Conference in 1989. This event was used as a model for other Districts to emulate.

2009 Honoree

Ian Ross

British Columbia Inst of Tech, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Citation:

For exemplary efforts and achievements to encourage and support student activities and to mentor students.

About:

Ross has been an integral member of the instructional staff of the Automation and Instrumentation Program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology since 1977. Upon joining the staff, he quickly became involved in ISA and has been the Faculty Representative of ISA’s BCIT Student Section for many years. As a result of Ross’s efforts, the majority of students who have attended the Automation and Instrumentation program have become ISA Student members.

Ross’s most ardent commitment to the ISA Student program has been participation in the Annual International Student Games, first conducted in 1993. Ross was instrumental in twice hosting the District 10 student games competition at BCIT. He has been the Team Champion for BCIT student teams since the beginning of its involvement in the Games. As a result of Ross’s dedication, BCIT teams have placed in competition at every outing in which they took part and are viewed around the world in a positive and friendly light due to the spirit of cooperation and congeniality he fostered.

Prior to joining BCIT, Ross was an instructor in the Physics department at Algonquin College in Ottawa, Ontario, where he adapted his background to the discipline of sensor and measurement technology. He holds a B.Sc in Physics from the University of Glasgow.
