MESs: How They Work

As defined by Michael McClellan, president of MES Solutions Inc. (www.messolutions.com) in Terrebonne, Ore., core and support functions of an MES are as follows:

MES core functions

  • Receive and sequence work orders
  • Assign work orders to workstations according to routing and sequence
  • Receive and assign inventory to work orders and locations
  • Move inventory to work or storage locations
  • Collect, compile, and report data
  • Respond to exceptions

MES support functions

  • Time and attendance
  • Maintenance
  • Documentation
  • Genealogy
  • Performance analysis
  • Statistical process control/Quality assurance
