What's P1451.4?

The IEEE standard P1451.4 is the latest addition to the smart transducer interface standards—established to address obstacles affecting smart sensor systems' development. The original purpose was to develop a set of sensor and software protocols for consistency and interoperability between components of smart sensor systems—even those from different manufacturers.

The standard dodges the complexities of other smart-sensor concepts by focusing on the sensor. It provides a simple mechanism for building plug-and-play technology into traditional analog sensors. It also specifies the format and content of self-identifying parameters stored on an EEPROM located on the sensor in the form of transducer electronic data sheet—TEDS.
