These two XML documents describe a single pressure transmitter. Two different programmers wrote the code. The informative content of the two documents is identical, though the data structure and the names of the elements are different.

Data exchange between two applications written by the two programmers is impossible unless they agree on a common document type definition to define the data scheme. To make a software application transportable and devices interoperable, the interface between devices must be standard.
